Delta Valencia Oranges

Delta (VI 474), which is also called Delta Seedless, is a Valencia selection from in South Africa in 1952 near Rustenburg Western Transvaal discovered by P. Niven and A. T. C. Leemo.

The trees are similar in vigor to Valencia trees, but slightly more erect in shape. The fruit are virtually seedless; occasionally a fruit will have one or two seeds. The total soluble solids or sugars and acidity are reported to be slightly lower than other Valencia selections. In Lindcove, California, the fruit reach legal maturity in late January/early February.

This South African variety produces a seedless fruit of high quality that resembles the Valencia but matures somewhat earlier. The tree is vigorous and productive. Delta originated as a dooryard seedling. It is thought to be of Valencia parentage and was found in 1952 by A. Smith, Government Entomologist, at Rustenburg, western Transvaal. It is considered to be promising and has already been planted to some extent.
